Sustainability stories

A sweeter solution

Stories that inspire our path to a better world

When it comes to sustainability, goals are important to keep us accountable. But at MillerKnoll, our commitment to finding sustainable solutions is best expressed in a much sweeter way. When our Herman Miller brand first opened the doors of its GreenHouse facility 30 years ago, they faced a problem. Large colonies of angry paper wasps had taken up residence around the exterior of the building.

The Herman Miller facilities team opted against pesticides and instead came up with a more sustainable solution: bees. 600,000 honeybees, to be exact, housed in a dozen hives on the grounds.

In 1995, at a time when sustainable sourcing was a novel concept, Knoll began working with the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)—a global nonprofit that promotes responsible forestry and serves as a checks-and-balances entity for the supply chain. Over the next two decades, the brand steadily increased its use of FSC-certified wood (FSC-C028824), reaching 70 percent of its wood product mix. That wasn’t just progress—it was a signal to the entire industry that premium design and responsible sourcing could go hand in hand.
